Yes 5G is the first to offer 5G service to offer unlimited plan with no speed caps in Malaysia! Yes, you heard that right. If you have been complaining about your mobile phone plan having a slow internet connection, Yes 5G might be something you want to check out.
This limited-time offer allows users on 5G-enabled plans to enjoy unlimited 5G data until March 31, 2022. It should be noted that the 5G data connection is available across Digital Nasional Berhad’s (DNB) 5G network only.
But will this be the best deal for students or anyone else to sign up? Let’s go through a few pointers before making a decision.
5G plans start at RM30 per month.
You can choose from one prepaid plan and two postpaid alternatives with Yes. Their Yes Prepaid FT5G Unlimited plan, which is RM30/month, is the most cost-effective option to get started. There is a 7Mbps data maximum on the plan’s 4G data. However, customers can enjoy unlimited 5G internet at uncapped rates in DNB’s service regions. The plan includes 9GB of hotspot data at full speed and unlimited calls to all networks.
The Yes Postpaid FT5G plan at RM49/month delivers 100GB of 4G data at uncapped speeds and unlimited 5G data without speed caps on DNB’s network if you choose a postpaid plan without a device contract. Unlimited calls to all networks are also included in the plan.
Phone Bundle Plans are available! BUT, at a very high UPFRONT price?
As an alternative, Yes sells gadget bundles with its RM99 Yes Postpaid FT5G plan for those who need one. With this package, you get unlimited access to DNB’s 5G network. Aside from that, you can make unlimited phone calls to any network.
From Xiaomi to Realme to Vivo to Nokia, they have 13 different 5G phones. There are no monthly fees for the Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G NE or the Vivo Y76, Vivo V23e 5G, Nokia X20 5G, or the Oppo A74 5G, but you must sign up for a 24-month contract to receive them.
All postpaid plans need a one-month subscription charge as an advance payment, which you will get the amount back over two months.
Also, a significant up-front payment is more expensive than the device itself! For example, the Realme GT Master Edition 5G, with 8GB RAM and 256 ROM retails for RM1,699, but you’ll have to pay RM1,727.95 upfront when you sign up for a contract online. It sounds a little bit of a turn-off, wouldn’t you agree?
Unlimited 5G Data Until 31 March 2022
Remember that the free unlimited 5G data promotion expires on March 31, 2022. This service is available as part of DNB’s free 5G access offer to telcos until March 31, 2019. Once the commercial agreement with DNB is concluded, Yes may provide an additional add-on for customers who want to continue using unlimited 5G service beyond March.
According to their website, if you sign up for a postpaid plan with Yes before March 31, 2022, there will be no price rise from 4G to 5G.
Compatible Devices and Voice Calls?
Yes 5G is currently only available for data services. Your connection will switch to Yes’ 4G network if you utilise Voice over LTE (VoLTE) to make a phone call. Currently, there is no option for voice-over 5G New Radio (VoNR).
Most 5G devices currently on the market are compatible with DNB’s 5G network, which uses the 3.5GHz spectrum for 5G coverage. But keep in mind that the DNB’s 5G network isn’t currently compatible with all 5G devices. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3, Galaxy S20 FE 5G, iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra cannot enjoy Yes 5G fast internet speed at this time.
Chinese firms such as Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Huawei make up the bulk of Yes’s list of 5G-enabled handsets. Not only does DNB’s website state that Asus ROG 5s and Motorola Edge 20 Pro are “Upcoming,” but Yes has categorised them as “Compatible” devices. So, we’re not too sure what to make of that at this point.
Where can I get 5G speed?
DNB’s 5G network is currently only available in Cyberjaya, Putrajaya, and Kuala Lumpur. Yes 5G is a new network; thus, the coverage is inconsistent, and you can only experience 5G service outdoors. Your connection will fall back to 4G if you are indoors or in an area where DNB’s 5G coverage does not extend. When more 700MHz sites come online, the coverage should improve in the long run.
It’s possible to receive average speeds of 100Mbps at the lowest point of coverage, and the plotted coverage zones offer an average speed of 514Mbps. By the end of the year, it hopes to have 500 locations serving 10% of the population. Penang, Johor, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Perak would be joining in the 40 percent of populous areas by 2022. In the long run, they hope to reach 80% coverage by the end of 2024. Which is a lot quicker than it will take to bring out 4G technology.
Should I Still Get the Yes 5G Plans?
Based on the above pointers, it is clear that DNB’s 5G network is still in the early phase and limited to Cyberjaya, Putrajaya and the Kuala Lumpur area. It’s a cool to have a lighting speed mobile 5G to show off to your friends.
And the mobile plans are affordable, since we’ll be getting a 5G internet connection.
However, it will cost us a hefty upfront payment without a compatible 5G device. If your current device already supports a 5G connection with DNB’s network, it would be a good deal. Plus, Yes announced that there will be no mobile plan price increase after this offer ends if you sign up for a contract right now.
It will take a while before DNB expands their 5G network. So if you are definitely within the 5G coverage area, it’s an excellent package with a reasonable mobile plan price. Else, you will be signing up early as an investment in the future when DNB has finally increased their 5G network coverage while you are using a 4G connection instead. – What do you think?
