We would like to extend our congrats to Evelyn Chen Siaw Yin for her recent success with Google. She was the only Malaysian student to have received Generation Google Scholarship for women in computer science (Asia Pacific).
Undoubtedly many of us choose a particular path in our education to reach the ultimate goal. Although the end goal is subjective to our own perception of success, we can always take inspiration from others striving to do their best.
A few months ago, Marc Woo, the Managing Director of Google Malaysia & Frontier Markets, congratulated Evelyn Chen for receiving a Google Scholarship. Many Computer Science students may feel jealousy and hopefully spark some competitive spirit.
According to Marc’s LinkedIn page, Evelyn has dealt with negative comments against women in tech from others before. But now, Evelyn, a current student at Taylors University studying computer science, is here to prove them wrong.
What is Generation Google Scholarship?
The Generation Google Scholarship was set up to help students studying computer science with strong leadership qualities. As such, recipients should demonstrate a passion for technology and academic excellence. Meanwhile, having proven to be exceptional leaders as well as role models.
Applicants from all over the world, including Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the Asia Pacific, competed for this scholarship between March 1 and March 29 earlier.
Apart from Malaysia, India (68), Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand (all of whom received USD1,000 for the 2021–2022 school year) accounted for the majority of recipients in the APAC region, with four each in Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, and Indonesia.
We hope that Evelyn’s success could ignite a solid will to constantly strive for greatness and keep working hard. We also wish Evelyn all the best and hope to see her make a difference in the world.
