Stepping into university is a huge change. Many students are forced to move far away from their hometown, and start fresh in a new city or even a new country just so they can pursue their studies. It may seem scary at first, but don’t worry! Life at university isn’t just about receiving an education, it’s also about making lifelong friends, discovering yourself and your passions, and becoming more independent outside of your family.
Here are five movies you need to watch to help you navigate the complexities of university life!
1. LEGALLY BLONDE (2001)
Legally Blonde is an iconic female empowerment movie about Elle Woods, who applies for Harvard Law School just so she can follow her ex-boyfriend who’s studying there. She struggles to fit in at first, especially with her platinum blonde hair, pink outfits and high heels. Elle Woods teaches you that you don’t have to compromise any part of your identity and that you shouldn’t underestimate someone and their capabilities based on how they look and what their gender is. This movie also teaches you that if you want to be successful, you need to persevere and work hard to achieve your dreams!
2. GOL & GINCU (2005)
Gol & Gincu which translates to Goalposts & Lipsticks in English, is a classic Malaysian rom-com about fashion major and ultimate girly girl Putri who starts playing futsal to try and win back her sports crazy ex-boyfriend, Eddy who’s already started dating sporty Shasha. Putri is determined to become a striker and in her journey to become one, she faces prejudice and ridicule like many women in sports but in time, she discovers the power of female friendship and she finally sees her worth as a winner, both on and off the pitch.
3. PITCH PERFECT (2012)
Pitch Perfect centers around The Barden Bellas, an all-female acapella singing group in university that is determined to beat the rival all-male singing group on campus. The Barden Bellas have become a laughing stock after an embarrassing incident at a regional singing competition and they find difficulty recruiting new singers into the group. However, the arrival of a new student in the group forces them to refresh their image. This is yet another movie on the list about the power of female friendship except this time you’ll also be entertained with the sweet harmonies during the movie’s several musical numbers.
4. THE SOCIAL NETWORK (2010)
The Social Network is a drama inspired by the real-life success story of how Mark Zuckberg created the world’s biggest social networking site, Facebook while he was still an undergraduate at Harvard. What started as an ambitious project by a computer science student and his friends quickly turned the Ivy League student into one of the world’s youngest self-made billionaires!
5. MONA LISA SMILE (2003)
Last on the list is Mona Lisa Smile, an inspiring and heartfelt movie set in the 1950s about an art history professor who challenges the students of an all-girls college to start rethinking their roles as women in society. She urges her students to aspire for a good career instead of just being wives and mothers. This movie shows you how hard it was for women to seek an education, and how far we’ve come since the 1950s to get to where we are today.
