Malaysia’s mixed-doubles team revealed some shocking news on December 6th. Not only were they withdrawing from the BWF World Championships 2021, but they were also splitting up.
Since they first teamed up to challenge tournaments, Goh Liu Ying and Chan Peng Soon have worked hard and come a long way. Many people have admired their relationship, especially the two of them. Thus, Goh wrote a touching farewell to Chan to commemorate their teamwork and friendship.
Even since they first started, they’ve come a long way! The two have been through many ups and downs in tournaments and games, but they’ve come out on top each time. As a case in point, their silver medal was at the Summer Olympics in Rio in 2016. “Although I am not the best badminton player, because of my best partner Peng Soon, we have achieved (much on) our mixed-doubles road,” Goh said.
Their 13 years of partnership seem like a blip in time. Goh, on the other hand, has savoured every moment they’ve spent together. “To Peng Soon, the best father, the best husband, and the best badminton partner thank you for staying with me, through the best times and the worst,” she wrote. “I sincerely believe you can achieve more brilliant successes after this!”
Only Chan knows what he plans to do in the future. Malaysian badminton’s other half will continue as Malaysia’s national team member. His current focus is on securing an Olympic partner for the 2024 Games in Paris. Goh has yet to make a decision on her future. And it’s not only about whether she’s going to put away her racket. “Give me some time, and I will satisfy everyone’s curiosity,” she promised.
It didn’t take long for Chan to tell her that she was still the best companion he had. Before departing, he recommended she get plenty of rest. Datuk Lee Chong Wei, a former national badminton player, used the opportunity to give Goh some advice on a different topic. His lighthearted comment, “It’s time to get married,” amused the crowd. Consequently, Goh’s only response to it was a pondering “hmm”.
Even if we desire otherwise, all good things must eventually end. Even though they’ve gone their separate ways, we know they’ll always be there for each other.
Our good wishes go to them for the next chapter of their badminton career.
