Ygor Coelho of Brazil pushed our World No. 7 Lee Zii Jia to three games before Lee Zii Jia advanced to the third round at the World Championships.
A 21-14, 22-24, 21-14 victory over the world’s 50th-ranked player in 58 minutes was the 23-year-first old’s win of the tournament.
After losing to a lower-ranked opponent in the previous match, Zii Jia again struggles to win this one.
The All-England winner had to fight hard to beat world No. 45 in the opening round as well. Canadian Jason Anthony Ho-Shue 21-10, 17-21, and 21-11 are the final three scores.
In his ninth competition in 11 weeks, Zii Jia admitted that he could have been sent home because of his bad health.
“There’s a lot of possibilities in this tournament as you can see that Viktor (Axelsen, the world No. 1 and Olympic champion) and Chou Tien-chen (world No. 4) had lost…even myself could have lost too,” said Zii Jia in a post-match interview.
“It was a very tough game, and I’m happy to win it today.
“The tournaments have been going on for more than three months now; it has really taken its toll on me both physically and mentally. I’m not as fit as in the beginning.”
“I just try to have fun, enjoy and do the best I can and have no regrets for this tournament.”
Zii Jia will play either Hans-Kristian Vittinghus from Denmark or Kanta Tsuneyama from Japan in the last eight.
In the men’s singles competition, Zii Jia is the only Malaysian to make pass to the third round after Liew Daren lost in the second round.
