Is your semester break coming soon, and your buddies are planning a road trip to Penang? We’ll often look for char kuey teow, cendol or other typical Penang delicacies. But did you know you’ll be able to find crazily tasty food in Penang, particularly in Penang’s Little India? It’s time to give your taste buds a chance to explore Best Indian Restaurants in Penang have to offer.

You won’t believe it until you try it! Penang’s Little India is located in the middle of Penang’s heritage zone in Georgetown. The pictures listed in this article is enough to make me drool.

Perhaps it is time to add some Indian Food into our checklist of food hunting in Penang. Surely going for something out of the norm would be exciting and, in this case, satisfying to taste.  Check out our list of the best place to taste Indian Food in Penang:

Pal Kade

From carrot to chocolate oreo milkshake, saffron to honey cinnamon milk, hot caramel coffee and everything in between, each cup is calci-yum! Also be amazed by how the drinks are briskly made before your eyes. Therefore, Pal Kade wins a spot into our best Indian Restaurants in Penang as the ‘milk specialist’!

Make sure to Get fresh cow’s milk in packets to bring home after you fill your tummy at Pal Kade.

Shobana’s Kitchen

If you think authentic Kerala cuisine is all about thick and rich curries, this new restaurant will make you think again. Having already made a name in Petaling Jaya, Shobana’s Kitchen is now vying for the palates of Penangites.

Boot it with their Coconut Fried Chicken, Fish Molee and Fish Cutlet, add on spoonful of Inji Pulli (ginger and tamarind-based concoction) and Chamanthi Podi (dry prawns and coconut condiment) and gravies onto the rice.

In no time, the banana leaf appears like a colourful canvas. Wrap up with Matka Masala Chai. Since a trip to Kerala isn’t near future, this restaurant is the place to be. Hence, Shobana’s Kitchen makes it into our list of Best Indian Restaurants in Penang as the banana leaf go-to place!

Shobana’s Kitchen has an awesome Sunday Special Briyana. But make sure you pre-order within 48 hours, else you won’t get your fix!

Mayura Spice Kitchen

If you wander in and around China Street for Indian food, you’ll feel as overwhelmed as a kid in a candy store. But if you narrow down your preference to delicious claypot briyani in an inviting ambience, you only need to pay attention to Mayura Spice Kitchen.

Get their best-selling chicken claypot briyani, take photos under the natural light that beams through and dig in. And thanks to their recently revamped menu, you’ll find dishes like Butter Chicken Curry, Prawn Masala and Kadai Mutton to give you that oh-so-worth-it experience.

They offer value for money lunch set meals for both vegetarian and non-vegetarians too!

Theeni Pandarams

A meal at Theeni Pandarams is a fun way to spend time with your friends who claim to be ultimate foodies. This cosy restaurant has all the good stuff for a hearty banana leaf meal, but the real deal is their Anbu Briyani Set.

The Taste of Satti Sooru

Imagine this: Lamb shank, homemade spices, gravies and rice cooked in a claypot over high flame and topped with boiled egg and herbs. Served piping hot, the aroma wafts into your nostrils as you taste meaty, smoky and savoury notes with an undertone of crisp rice texture.

Papadam adds an element of crunch while raita tames down the spices when needed. Your spoon satisfyingly scrapes off every itty-bitty caramelised layer at the bottom. When you are done, you will understand the hype of “Satti Sooru” at this new eatery.

Satti Sooru is pretty famous for their Fish Head Curry, so if you’re a fish lover, check it out!

The Crib

Though perched towards the end of Penang Street, The Crib has already caught the hearts of many. The artsy, convivial space is welcoming and compliments the menu. Their signatures include Spanish Gambas – shrimps cooked in olive oil and saffron, Legged Freak – octopus with Crib’s special herbs and Salt Baked Fish.

If not for the options like Idhiyapam Briyani (string hoppers), Mutton Ghee Roast and Fish Curry, you might forget of being in Little India. Stick around long enough for a boozy night out, courtesy of their cocktails. The Crib’s Salt Baked Fish is the main attraction many customers seems to love.

Meera Briyani

Briyani is one market that is increasingly gaining traction and understandably so, this restaurant is making the right move. Their take on this comfort dish is Dubai Liyari Briyani, which highlights natural Medina Saffron and made without the use of artificial flavouring and MSG.

Be it meat or seafood, portions are generous, sides are simple yet pronounced and the balance of flavours work well. Malaysian favourites such as Nasi Goreng and Mee Goreng are ideal for those seeking a lighter menu. (Some times they serve Lamb Shank Briyani too, if you get the chance to taste it, GO FOR IT!)

Vighna Bamboo Briyani

Vighna Bamboo Briyani is perhaps one of the pioneers of bamboo briyani in Malaysia. Having set up branches in Ipoh, Johor and Malacca, they have now set foot on Penang Island. Helming a secret recipe and never-ending variety, this branch is earning accolades in quick succession.

We are not merely talking about mutton and chicken briyani, but squid, prawn, fish and crab as well. And let those fruit lassies subside the lip-smacking heat. Well, a visit to this briyani joint may not look good in your calorie diary, but it’s well worth it. Try out their Bamboo Nasi Lemak too guys! They might just be the best amongst the best Indian Restaurants in Penang.

  • 🌟 Meet Audad at #SunwayUniversity! 🎓

Our super good-looking, fun, and sporty student from Kuwait 🇰🇼 has been in Sunway for two months now — and it’s been amazing watching him settle in and enjoy life in Malaysia! 🇲🇾💪

Audad has been keeping active with his love for the gym and swimming, and he’s been exploring the area like a true adventurer. He even learned to cook for the first time here — starting with fried rice, guided lovingly by his mom over a video call. 🍳🥰

We also had a great dinner together, and Audad introduced us to an amazing pizza spot in Subang Jaya. 🍕 RM20 for a large pizza — definitely a hidden gem worth returning to!

Good food, good company, and good vibes all around. Looking forward to more outings together — living student life both inside and #BeyondTheClassroom, Audad! 🌟 All the best in your Mechatronic Engineering journey — keep shining, stay focused, and don’t forget to maintain that scholarship 😉

  • Spending some time with our students at #UTM! 🌟

We had the pleasure of meeting Aung Thant from Myanmar, currently pursuing his Master’s degree, Fauzan from Brunei studying Bachelor in Geomatics Engineering, and Abdalla who’s taking Bachelor in Civil Engineering.

It was such a lively catch-up session over coffee — full of laughter, stories, and newfound connections! Despite being in the same faculty, it was their very first time meeting each other (it’s a big faculty after all 😆).

All three of them are energetic, driven, and ready to make the most of their student life here in Johor Bahru. We’re wishing them all the best in their academic journey and can’t wait to see where their paths lead next — both inside and #BeyondTheClassroom. 🌟
