Anyone missing gigs during this CMCO? I personally know I miss the feeling of getting jabbed in the ribs while wrestling for the barrier at KL Live (a sentence I never knew I would say). The feeling of getting your hair pulled on by accident, your toes being stomped on, your makeup absolutely sweated off, being charged RM10 for a bottle of water,…. Ah, fond memories! The COVID-19 pandemic has changed a lot of the ways we used to lead our lives, and live shows being one of them. Luckily, performers are still putting on shows for their dedicated fans worldwide— in a way that is more accessible for all.

Oh Wonder, the indie band that all of us had on our playlists in 2013 at some point, decided to bring their show to Malaysia over Instagram Live on 20 May 2020. Hosted by FlyFm and Good Vibes Festival, fans could all attend this virtual promo tour at the swipe of the hand. There was even an exclusive fan meet, where fans had to be one of the lucky 20 participants who got special one on one time with their faves.

Fans were thrilled to have experienced this once in a lifetime phenomenon with their favourite band. Playing their best hits from their previous releases, Oh Wonder also performed tracks off their latest album, “No One Else Can Wear Your Crown”. As a special treat, they even played unreleased music for their lucky fans! 20 lucky views got a taste of future releases that were on the way. Which means on top of the new album they gave us, we can expect more from Oh Wonder soon!

It seems that Oh Wonder themselves were intending to set a record of live shows by performing 37 sets in 37 days. That’s one way to keep busy during a quarantine!
37 instagram gigs in 37 days. You can decide whether these are the highlights or lowlights ???? #professionals #wheresmywine pic.twitter.com/STM11sJENZ

We know we enjoyed hearing hits like, “Body Gold”, live, but what about you? How do virtual gigs compare to live ones? While the experience is nowhere similar, accessibility for fans definitely has a larger reach. That being said… there’s just something else about being mushed with a hundred other people just as passionate as you are, voices all garbled together only to form incoherent screams, all just to catch a glimpse of your favourite artist. Virtual concerts may be artists answer to the current climate but gosh, we can barely wait for the day to be able to return to stadiums and concert halls.
