Touch rugby, also known as Touch Football, is probably unknown to you as a Malaysian. However, it is commonly played in countries where rugby is their bread & butter.

This sport has been slowly growing within Malaysia’s students and expat scene for the past decade. Plus, it is by far the best sport to get into if you’re looking for new friends while playing a safe sport.

Do not be alarmed by the name of this sport. Touch Rugby or touch football is merely a non-contact version of rugby with two teams of 6 on the field. So if you are worried that you will be pulverized by a giant in this sport, you can relax!

In fact, this game is suitable for anyone. Although it is advantageous that if you have speed, teamwork and communication. These are the qualities that win games!

The Rules of Touch Rugby

Touch rugby’s rules are more strongly associated with those of rugby league. The game’s goal is to score more tries than the other team, as it is in all forms of rugby.

Instead of being tackled, opposing players simply touch the ball carrier. When a defending team member touches any part of their body or the ball, they are brought to a halt. As a result, a try can be scored in as few as six touches for the team in possession.

After six touches, they lose possession of the ball, and the opposing team gains it. Kicking is not permitted in this style of rugby. The ball cannot be passed forward in this game, as it cannot be in any other.

Typical touch rugby pitches are 70 by 50 metres and rectangular in shape. There are fewer seams, making it easier to handle than a traditional rugby ball (size 4 instead of 5). There are 40 minutes of gameplay (two halves of 20 minutes). A try is worth one point, but if it is scored by a female player in a mixed game, she receives an extra point.

Get Social & Work Out!

With touch rugby, you get to enjoy all the significant aspects of rugby, but without the bruising tackles and rucking that are so common in the sport of rugby. Instead, running, ball handling, and collaboration are critical components in touch rugby. The sport’s regulating body in Malaysia, FIT Touch Malaysia, has begun registering local clubs and athletes.

Start searching for the nearest touch rugby club in your area as you are bound to find one, especially in Kuala Lumpur. If you are an international in KL and looking to make some new friends and sweat while you’re at it, check out KL Touch or Marlins Rugby Club!

Hey KL-ers, join KL Touch!

A healthy mix of local and expat players is present in KL Touch. As the game is all about communication, talking to each other helps win the game. This is especially important for young people looking to acquire self-confidence and learn how to engage with others.

It’s also an excellent method to stay in shape. Finding a club like this and spending an afternoon playing such a fun sport is a terrific way to spend the weekend. Mainly when most of us spend far too much time glued to our screens.

Players of all ages are welcome to join in the fun. Children as young as six can now participate in KL Touch’s youth programme.

Only KL Touch is available to anyone wanting to just stop over and play. Contact KL Touch if you’re interested in learning a new sport or if you already play and want to train with other like-minded individuals. Of course, you may always look forward to a fantastic chillout session afterwards.

  • Catching up with Sayed, Yaqoob & Moutaz at #UniKL! 💸🎓

Nothing stops these three — not even the rain! 🌧️✨ Despite having online classes, they made time to meet us and receive their #FreeStudentVisa cash rebates with big smiles and even bigger excitement.

Though they come from different countries, Sayed, Yaqoob, and Moutaz have quickly become close friends — sharing laughs, stories, and now, a rewarding student journey together in Malaysia. 🇲🇾 They were beyond happy to receive their rebates (already planning how to make the most of it! 😉) and proudly said they’d 100% recommend Team #EMGA to their friends — who, by the way, were super curious and came over to see what they were signing too! 😂

Moments like these remind us what it’s all about — supporting students, celebrating milestones, and creating connections that go far #BeyondTheClassroom. 💙

With classes that bring students from different cohorts together, Fadi shared how it feels like a close-knit community at NUMed — everyone knows each other and supports one another along the journey. ❤️ Taking inspiration from exchange students who travel every chance they get, he’s already planning for his long winter and summer breaks, ready to explore more of Malaysia and even nearby countries! 🌏✈️

Wishing you an amazing journey ahead, Fadi — filled with learning, friendship, and adventures both inside and #BeyondTheClassroom! 💙
