Suppose you’re an international student preparing to embark on a study abroad experience. In that case, you may be wondering what it’s like to adjusting to new culture in Malaysia. Rest assured, things aren’t as bad as you might think and it can be enjoyable! Don’t worry; it is normal to even worry about it as you step into the unknown.

Learning about other cultures and developing a global perspective can be gained by experiencing cultural differences firsthand. As a result, we’ve put together our top four tips for making this move as easy as possible for you.

Keep Your Stress Levels in Check.

Working out is a great way to get your body to release dopamine, which can help you feel less stressed. Stress can be relieved by going to the gym, practising yoga, or joining one of your school’s intramural teams.

If you’re stressed, that socialising can help. It “increases a hormone that lowers anxiety levels and makes us feel more confident in our ability to deal with stressors.” Check out your school’s website to see if there are any recreational sports leagues or clubs you can join. You can also join a student club on campus or find new hobbies that make you socialise with other people.

You can also think about putting these ideas into practice every day to help you stay calm:

  • Follow YouTube workout routines to get in shape.
  • You can join student clubs on the web (many schools have moved these groups to platforms like Facebook)
  • Listen to some music.
  • Online tutorials can help you learn how to cook new foods.

An Open Mind is a Strong Mind.

Keep in mind that perspective can be compelling. When you meet people in your new home country, be sure to keep an open mind. Consider how their culture and background make them act the way they do. When you move to a new place, this is very important. It lets you put yourself in their shoes and see things from their point of view that might not make sense at first. You don’t need to change your traditions and values when you move to a new country or adapt to a new culture, but you might want to. Even though you want your classmates to understand and accept your differences, you should also do the same.

Always stay curious!

ask question

When you move to a new country, it’s normal to have many questions and be curious about what you see. Don’t be afraid to ask if you want to know where the best hiking trails and breakfast places are or if you have a question about a word or phrase. If you look around, you’ll find that people are always willing to share their knowledge with other people.

Tips: To make yourself and others understandable in a new language, you may need to clarify, repeat, and rephrase what you say.

Other international students are there to help you.

On your study abroad trip, you’ll meet other international students who might be going through the same things as you do when adapting to a new culture. Talking about adjusting to new culture in Malaysia and how to deal with it can help you better understand your new country and its people.

Mentoring programmes are available at many universities and colleges. Upper-year students from the same country are paired with first-year students from the same country, and they help each other out. They can learn about their new country, ask questions, and make friends with other students by doing this. Most colleges and universities also have groups for international students, and many of them also have international student clubs. These clubs usually hold many events both in-person and online in the academic year, allowing international students to form a group.

See if your school has one of these programmes or clubs.

Getting used to a new culture is a long-term process that takes time. Take your time, and don’t be too hard on yourself during this journey. These tips will help you adjusting to new culture in Malaysia and ensure your study abroad experience gets off to a good start.

  • Spending some time with our students at #UTM! 🌟

We had the pleasure of meeting Aung Thant from Myanmar, currently pursuing his Master’s degree, Fauzan from Brunei studying Bachelor in Geomatics Engineering, and Abdalla who’s taking Bachelor in Civil Engineering.

It was such a lively catch-up session over coffee — full of laughter, stories, and newfound connections! Despite being in the same faculty, it was their very first time meeting each other (it’s a big faculty after all 😆).

All three of them are energetic, driven, and ready to make the most of their student life here in Johor Bahru. We’re wishing them all the best in their academic journey and can’t wait to see where their paths lead next — both inside and #BeyondTheClassroom. 🌟

  • Introducing Aung Myat Moe at #UTM! 🏗️🎓

Meet our Civil Engineering student who recently arrived and has just begun his Bridging Programme at the Johor campus. Despite a late registration, Team #EMGA made sure everything went smoothly — from registration to medical check-up and passport submission — all in a single hectic day!

Now that everything’s settled, Aung Myat Moe is ready to focus on his studies and make the most of his university life here in Malaysia. Wishing him all the best as he embarks on this exciting new chapter filled with learning and growth #BeyondTheClassroom. 🌟

  • Spending some time with Ayesha at #NUMed! 🌟

Currently pursuing her MBBS, Ayesha is truly enjoying her time in Malaysia — especially in Johor Bahru, which she finds peaceful compared to bustling Kuala Lumpur, where her sister is studying. She loves the weather (aside from the occasional sudden rain!) and has already built a strong circle of friends, both local and international — even one from her home country! ☀️🌧️

Staying at Econest has made student life even better, with its lively community and nearby cafés perfect for socialising after classes. Before the next semester gets tougher, she’s planning to explore as much as she can around Malaysia.

We’re excited to see Ayesha continue her journey toward becoming a doctor, achieving her dreams both inside and #BeyondTheClassroom. 🌟

  • Catching up with Zwe Mon Aung at #NUMed! 🌿🎓

Currently pursuing his Foundation in Science, Zwe Mon Aung shared that while the transition from IGCSE to university studies has been a little challenging, he’s adapting well and improving with time. He’s also embraced Malaysian culture — already a fan of nasi lemak and its spicy sambal! 🍛🔥

Loving the peaceful and spacious NUMed campus, he’s looking forward to completing his foundation with flying colours and progressing to MBBS soon. Keep thriving both inside and #BeyondTheClassroom, Zwe Mon Aung! 💪✨

  • Welcoming Hana to #MonashUniversityMalaysia! 🎓💙

While Hana attended her full-day orientation at Monash, Team #EMGA assisted her mother in checking the accommodation nearby. ☕🏡

We even had a quick coffee while waiting for the agent to arrive — everything went smoothly and all is set for Hana’s exciting journey ahead! ✨

  • Introducing Chu Myat — a passionate medical student at #NUMed! 🩺💙

Loving every bit of life here in Malaysia, Chu Myat says she hasn’t even thought about going back home yet — it already feels like a second home to her! 🇲🇾✨ Currently pursuing her MBBS, she’s coping well with her studies; the subjects can be challenging, but with the help of friends, she’s managing beautifully and staying motivated. 💪📚

She hasn’t had much time to explore yet, but plans to visit Kuala Lumpur with her family during the long break this December — a well-deserved treat after months of hard work! 🌆🎉

Here’s to a bright and fulfilling journey ahead, Chu Myat! May every step bring you closer to your dream of becoming a doctor and making a difference, both inside and #BeyondTheClassroom. 💙

  • Welcoming Shazlina to #SEGI! 🎓💫

It was such a pleasure having Shazlina, her mother, and a friend — who once studied in Malaysia himself — join us for a campus tour today! 🇲🇾✨ Together with Team #EMGA, they explored every corner of the campus, from the labs and classrooms to the clinic and cafeteria, getting a real feel of what student life at SEGi is like. 🏫☕

They also had a wonderful discussion with Dr. Lydia from her faculty, who shared valuable insights about the Bachelor of Civil Engineering programme and what to expect in the coming semesters. 👷‍♀️📘

We’re so excited for Shazlina to begin her studies in January 2026 — and we can’t wait to welcome her back soon to start her journey inside and #BeyondTheClassroom! 💕

  • Finally in Malaysia — a warm welcome to Fadhliah at #MAHSAUniversity! ✨

Our student from Brunei, who first met Team #EMGA during the Yes2Malaysia August Expo, has officially arrived and is ready to kickstart her Bachelor of Medical Imaging journey. 🩻🎓

From last-minute paperwork and passport renewals to a program change midway, her application process was nothing short of a rollercoaster. But with incredible teamwork between her counselor Ms. Amanda, and MAHSA’s Mr. Feroz, everything came together just in time — and she managed to miss only one week of class (thanks to the September and October holidays!). 🙌

Her registration day turned into a mini campus tour as we navigated the bustling grounds, finding the right stations and officers to get her documents cleared. We even wrapped it up with a quick lunch filled with laughter — reminiscing about how worried we once were, now replaced with relief and excitement. 🍽️💬

Fadhliah shared how grateful she was for how fast, smooth, and reliable the entire process was, and we couldn’t be prouder to see her all set for classes next week — this time, fully ready and knowing exactly where each block is! 🗺️💪

Here’s to a bright start ahead, Fadhliah — may your studies be filled with learning, discovery, and growth both inside and #BeyondTheClassroom. 💙
