Growing up thinking that a combination of a wealthy career path, a loving family, and a solid social circle is the key to a happy life. But in reality, a person that achieved all the above may still feel “empty”. Hence, the need to discover your life’s purpose might be a good idea even when you’re just starting out university.

Finding your purpose is more than just a cliché or an idea that will never come true. Instead, you can use it to live better, happier, and healthier lives that too many people don’t even try. So always keep in mind that it’s not exactly a destination; it’s a process!
The more you explore, the better you get to discover yourself.

Why is a sense of purpose important?

You can be happy if you have a sense of purpose control and that what you’re doing is essential. This has been linked to longer life spans. There is no need to choose between having a meaningful life and having enough money. Maybe the more important your life is, the more money you will make.

Finding a purpose and meaning in your life is essential. However, it can be hard to quickly determine what a product is for and why it’s crucial.

The best way to discover your life’s purpose is to do a lot of self-reflection, listen to other people’s advice, and figure out what drives you the most.

To start living a more meaningful life, use these seven ways to find or find out what your goal is.

Giveaway your time, money or talent

To discover your life’s purpose, you should start helping others.

Before giving, being a taker was linked to happiness, but being a giver was more connected to meaningfulness. Those who were the “givers” in a relationship felt more connected to the idea that living a meaningful life was important.

If you want to be altruistic, you can do things like help people every day, volunteer for a non-profit, donate money to a cause you believe in, or do all of these things at once.

Doing good things for other people can make you feel like your life has meaning. So whether you drive an elderly neighbour to the grocery store once a week or spend two Saturdays a month at a soup kitchen. Doing good things for other people can make you feel like your life has meaning.

Sometimes it’s hard to figure out what you’re really excited about. Finally, you may enjoy a wide range of activities, and you may not even know how important some of them are until it’s too late.

Fortunately, you might be able to get some help from other people. The thing you love and what drives you may not even be on your mind.

People might tell you what they remember about you or what comes to mind when they think of you. You could ask them. You could also pay attention when someone compliments or says something nice about you. Finally, check the data you’ve gathered and look for trends.

Listening to what people say about you can help you pursue your own interests. It doesn’t matter if you’re called “a wonderful entertainer” or “you have a passion for helping the elderly.”

Make sure you don’t think about the people you have to see, like coworkers or family. Besides work and family events, think about the important people to you.

This is what your friends say about you. If you live with people working to make the world a better place, you might be more motivated and inspired to do the same.

Unless you live with people who make you feel bad, it might be time to change things up. It’s hard to feel excited and important when you’re around people who aren’t interested in making positive changes.

Begin Talking With People You Don’t Know.

There are a lot of places where you can check your social media accounts while waiting for someone else. For example, you can do this at a bar or train. Try to fight off the desire. Instead, talk to people who are near you.

Ask them if they have any upcoming projects or hobbies that they like, and see if they can help you. They might be interested in joining a charitable group or giving to a specific cause, so try and find out more about them.

In the beginning, it may be uncomfortable to talk to people outside of your own social circle. But it could open your eyes to new things and jobs that you didn’t know about.

You might learn about new things to do or places to visit. These kinds of activities can help you figure out your life’s goal.

Explore Things you are interested in

Is there a subject you talk about on social media, like Facebook or Twitter? For example, how many social media posts do you talk about climate change or people who have moved away?

No matter what you do, do you often post pictures of yourself doing the same thing on Instagram?

In-person, it’s a good idea to think about the kinds of conversations you like to have with people. For example, do you like talking about the past with other people? Or would you instead spread the word about the new money-saving ideas you’ve found?

To find out what makes your heart sing with happiness, you might use social media to find out what you like.

What injustices annoys you

In many cases, people’s passion projects revolve around a particular injustice in the world. Is there anything that upsets you so much that just thinking about it makes you miserable?

It could be animal welfare, civil rights, or a group that wants to make kids less fat. Older people alone over the holidays or drug and alcohol abusers need more treatment options, which are things that make you sad. So again, some groups need your help.

If your mission is important enough to you, you don’t have to give your whole life to it. For example, you might help a cause you care about because of your job. Another way to help a cause you care about is to give your time instead of money.

Find out what you love to do.

Just thinking about what you like to do can help you discover your life’s purpose.

Are you a big fan of musical movies? Then, you could use your skills to bring live performances to people who aren’t getting enough of them, like kids.

There are many things that you enjoy doing with data regularly. This skill could be handy for a lot of different businesses.

Make a list of your skills, talents, and interests and think about how you can bring them to the table. The next step is to think about how you can use your enthusiasm in a way that makes you happy.

Final Note

A few days, weeks, or months aren’t enough time to figure out what your life is about. There’s only one step you can take at a time, no matter how long it takes.

This could happen as time goes on. You may find out that your goal has changed. As a child, you might have liked working with animals. Now, you want to help fight human trafficking. Because you can do more than one thing in your life, too,

It doesn’t mean that just because you have a goal doesn’t mean you should stop doing what you’re already doing! For example, as a hairdresser, you might think that your life’s work makes people feel good about their looks.

There are times when you might want to stop and think about whether the path you’re on is taking you in the direction you want. If it isn’t, you can change your approach. But, unfortunately, if you’re going to discover what your life’s purpose is, you’re likely to have to go through some turns, forks, and traffic lights on the way.

Naif is an Indian student, currently pursuing his Bachelor of Business (Honours) in International Business & Marketing at Taylor’s University (TU). We first met Naif during our expo in Saudi Arabia, where he connected with Mr. Hasan — as his father is working there — and it’s great to now see him beginning his study journey here in Malaysia.

Team #myEMGA handed over his #FreeFlightTicket cash reward, and Naif is enjoying his time in Malaysia so far. While he’s still adjusting to the tropical weather (which can be a little too hot at times 😄), he’s already looking forward to the upcoming holidays. With exams coming up in the first week of January, he’s staying focused and giving it his best. 📚☀️

All the best for your exams, Naif! Wishing you success, growth, and memorable experiences both inside and #BeyondTheClassroom. 🌟

  • 🌷🎓 Welcoming Dzihny’s Next Chapter — #MonashUniversityMalaysia! 🇶🇦🌟

From Qatar to Malaysia, Dzihny joined MUFY with Team #myEMGA last year, and yesterday we proudly celebrated her graduation — a truly meaningful milestone. We had a lovely catch-up with Dzihny and her parents, sharing laughs, heartfelt conversations, and even planning ahead with her friends (who are also EMGA students!) as they prepare for their transfer programmes together. 💖

Seeing Dzihny celebrate alongside her mother was especially touching — a proud moment filled with smiles, gratitude, and joy. Our cozy post-conversation gathering with her friends, Ms. Nisa, and her family was equally heartwarming, full of encouragement and excitement for what’s next. 🌸

Dzihny is now enjoying a short break while preparing for her next chapter — heading to Monash University for her Psychology degree (February 2026 intake). Time truly flies, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see how far she has come, growing both academically and personally, embracing life #BeyondTheClassroom. ✨

Dzihny, keep dreaming big and moving forward with confidence. Team #myEMGA will always be here to support, guide, and celebrate every step of your journey. And to future students out there — if Dzihny can dream big, so can you. 🌟

Team #myEMGA handed over her #FreeStudentVisa cash rebate, and Fathima shared how grateful she is for the support she received throughout the process — from guidance to making everything simple, smooth, and quick. Having that reassurance made a big difference in helping her focus on her studies and adjust confidently. 🌟

Welcome to Malaysia, Fathima! Wishing you a rewarding study journey filled with growth, new experiences, and memorable moments both inside and #BeyondTheClassroom. 💫

  • 🌿✨ Meet Islam at #XMU! 🎓🇩🇿🇶🇦

Islam is an Algerian student from Qatar, currently pursuing Foundation in Science (Physical Science) at Xiamen University Malaysia. Supported by Team #myEMGA throughout his study journey, he has truly felt at home from day one and absolutely loves the XMU experience — so much so that he’s already excited to recommend it to his brother (once he’s of age!) and friends who are looking for the right programme.

He’s especially enjoying how green and vibrant Malaysia is, along with the amazing local cuisine — always eager to try something new. And yes, he’s also fascinated (and slightly obsessed 😄) with how obsessed we are with milk tea, making it his personal mission to try a different one every time! 🧋

Islam shared how welcoming the XMU staff have been, and how impressed he is by the university’s beautiful architecture and design — a peaceful yet inspiring learning environment. With the added bonus of easy access to Kuala Lumpur, he truly feels he’s getting the best of both worlds.

Now fitting in seamlessly, Islam has already made plans to continue his Bachelor’s degree at XMU, embracing student life both inside and #BeyondTheClassroom. 🌟
